Taking the First Step

The First Step - Twelve Step Program

Scripture:

“But he said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.’ Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me.” — 2 Corinthians 12:9

Reflection:
Deciding to take the first step in a twelve-step program is daunting. It means choosing to face truths we’d rather ignore. But it is also liberating.

At first, I thought the twelve steps weren’t for me. I wasn’t an alcoholic or a substance abuser. But what I discovered is that these steps are not only for addiction — they’re for anyone who struggles. And that’s all of us.

The first step requires us to admit we are powerless over our issues. On our own, we can’t overcome them. That’s humbling — but it’s also the doorway to freedom. Because when we admit our weakness, we stop pretending to be our own savior and allow Christ to be our strength.

The truth is, we can’t do this alone. We need God, and we need community. Celebrate Recovery has shown me that God often uses others to speak truth into my life. When I listen, I hear His voice through them. That support has helped me overcome obstacles I could never face alone.

Maybe you’ve been avoiding taking that first step, believing it’s not for you. But the truth is, we all need to surrender. Whatever your struggle, I encourage you to take the step. The process works, because God meets us in our weakness.

Prayer:
Lord, thank You for reminding me that I don’t have to face my struggles alone. Teach me to admit my weakness and trust in Your strength. Surround me with people who will walk with me as I walk with You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
