Why I’m sitting in a coffee shop on a Sunday evening

Sitting in a Coffee Shop

I'm sitting in Starbuck's on a Sunday night thinking about how my life has changed over the last few years. The deep reflection hit me after my kids went to their mom's for her week. My house becomes eerily quiet, something I used to appreciate.

I spent many years working from home, isolating myself from the world, and then moving into the Vault, a co-working space located in the NewBo district of Cedar Rapids.

The change came on gradually, as I began working by myself, and not talking too much about anyone else, but as time went by, I started connecting with others who are in the Vault and ultimately teamed up with my business partners.

Now, I find myself getting more active than ever, becoming incredibly social. The change in lifestyle is beyond the Vault, impacting every part of my life, so while sitting at home, by myself, I wound myself feeling uncomfortable, and even longing for being part of a social atmosphere, ultimately landing in the Starbuck's I'm visiting tonight.

Let it be known; I would not have chosen Starbuck's if I knew of a local alternative, and unfortunately Brewhemia, which is my favorite place is not open at this time of night, nor is any other local coffee shop.

And, Starbuck's isn't that happening either, with only a few patrons, but that's good enough for me. It's action, and has people who are sufficient to satisfy my social need for the moment! To think, I have a social need, if you know me, you will laugh as I've been a loner most of my life.

What do you do when you have a need for a social atmosphere?
