Starting Again with Genesis

From the beginning, Genesis reveals timeless struggles, God’s tests of faith, and His call to loyalty.

Once again, I am beginning a journey through the Bible cover-to-cover, starting in Genesis. My goal is not to dissect every detail this time, but to read straight through, keeping Scripture in its larger perspective and context.

Genesis Speaks Today

Genesis is a powerful book. It gives us the beginning, but also stories that remain deeply relevant to our lives today. The struggles of Abraham, the conflicts among families, the testing of faith—all of it mirrors the issues we still face.

Some dismiss the Bible as outdated, but when you read it cover-to-cover, you see that the same challenges and sins we face today were present from the very beginning. God’s Word hasn’t lost its relevance—it speaks directly into the human condition.

The Challenge of Genealogies

I’ll admit, the genealogies in Genesis are not my favorite part. But they remind me that God values history, legacy, and the details we often overlook. They anchor the stories in real lives and generations.

Lessons from Abraham

Abraham’s journey strikes me the most. God sent him into unfamiliar lands, asking him to trust in the unknown. In the same way, God sends us into situations that stretch us beyond comfort, shaping us into people who build stronger communities of faith.

And then there’s Abraham’s ultimate test: God commanding him to sacrifice his son. At the very moment Abraham lifted the knife, an angel stopped him, proving his loyalty and showing God’s mercy. This moment reminds us that God allows struggles, but His purpose is always to draw us closer and test our faith, not to harm us.

Relevance for Us

Genesis doesn’t shy away from showing the raw reality of human sin—brokenness, betrayal, violence. Yet it also points us forward to the redemption fulfilled in Christ. From the beginning, God’s plan was at work.

Genesis is so much more than a story of creation. It is about loyalty, faith, and God’s ongoing work through imperfect people. And it sets the stage for everything to come.

I encourage you: open your Bible and start reading Genesis. You’ll find yourself face-to-face with the struggles of humanity and the greatness of God, right from the very first page.
