What does it take to have a daily routine that truly completes your day? Developing a healthy rhythm isn’t easy, but it’s worth it when we commit to living by it — no matter what distractions come our way.
Routines reveal more than we think. They expose the small habits that quietly steal our energy, peace, and focus. Sometimes it’s something as simple as what we eat or drink that can derail us.
My Routine Disrupted
I’m writing this from Las Vegas, where I came for the Grow With Video Live conference hosted by Think Media. I drove over 1,800 miles from Colorado, sleeping only three hours on the way. Normally, a liter of Diet Pepsi would fuel my day, but the high cost of road-trip sodas kept me away. Surprisingly, I felt great.
For three days after I arrived, I stuck to walking, hydrating, and staying clear-headed. But then I spotted a deal on two-liter bottles at CVS, and my old habit came rushing back. Out went the restful nights and steady energy, and in came the anxiety and caffeine roller coaster. That one decision reminded me how quickly routines can unravel.
When Life Interrupts
2022 was a strong year for me. I walked over five miles a day on average. My mind was sharper, my body stronger, and my productivity higher. But when my mom was diagnosed with six months to live, I dropped everything — my business, my health routine, and much of my personal development — to spend time with her. She passed in only six weeks.
Soon after, I moved back into my childhood home to care for my dad, who insisted he didn’t want to go to a nursing home. He passed in late 2023.
Those were the right decisions — ones I will never regret. But my routine and health took a back seat. My church used to be my anchor; I poured myself into leading groups and serving daily. My mom would joke that I was “married to the church” — and in truth, that was my healthiest marriage.
Getting Back to What Matters
So how does all this relate to a daily routine that completes your day? Everything. Life will always bring responsibilities and distractions we didn’t plan for. But even in those seasons, we can adapt and keep the core habits that help us thrive.
We like to blame others or circumstances for pulling us off track, but often, we’re the ones letting go of what we know we need. For me, it’s as simple as choosing water over Diet Pepsi, or recommitting to walking daily. Small choices build into routines that change our lives.
A Spiritual Routine
Paul wrote:
“Be very careful, then, how you live — not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil.”
— Ephesians 5:15–16
A daily routine isn’t just about health or productivity — it’s about aligning our lives with God’s will, moment by moment. Prayer, Scripture, fellowship, and physical care aren’t separate categories — they’re all part of stewardship.
I’m realizing that being in Las Vegas is forcing me to walk more. The real question is: Will I keep that discipline when I return home?
Stay tuned. And as I relearn, I’ll keep sharing.
Love God.
Love People.
Make Disciples.
Prayer
Lord, help me build routines that honor You, not just myself. Show me the distractions I need to let go of, and guide me to steward my body, mind, and spirit well. Teach me to make the most of each day for Your glory. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
