Things I Cannot Change – My Past
Have you ever asked yourself, “What are the things I cannot Change?” If you know the Serenity Prayer, you know that this is the first line of the prayer. I have said this prayer for a year and a half, and this is the first time I have asked myself this question.
The first thing I cannot change is my past. We cannot undo what has happened previously to this moment. Our actions can be different now, as we don't have to repeat our errors.
Unfortunately, we are prone to repeat our errors out of habit, causing us further grief. You would think we would try a different route, but most of us don't.
We cannot change the past, but we can do things differently right now.
I cannot change other people
No matter what I do, I cannot change other people. They have a mind of their own, and they are going to do what they want. Our focus needs to be on guidance from God, and our actions, not somebody else. Trying to change someone else to conform to what we want is a loser of a deal.
The best bet is to be a great example, and then let them do with it what they will. I know that it is easy to say, and it is much tougher to do as I am working on being the best example I can. Unfortunately, I need a lot of work, but the good news is I have a lot of opportunities to grow!
I am going to make mistakes no matter what
Mistakes are inevitable, especially when you are growing. If we aren't making mistakes, we aren't growing.
I know that this seems strange to say we are growing when we make mistakes, and maybe I should change it to, we are growing when we learn from the mistakes we are making.
We aren't growing when we make mistakes and fail to learn anything from them.
These are just a few of the things I cannot change, and I wish I could. There are numerous others, but this gives you an idea as to what it means to accept the thing we cannot change.
