The Ides of March

I just finished watching The Ides of March with George Clooney, who portrayed a Democrat Governor running for President. We saw the deal making and the manipulation inside the campaign.

A couple of years ago, I stepped up as a delegate. I wanted to have my say in the political process because I became determined to have my voice. What I found was not what I wanted to see in politics and resembled the games displayed in The Ides of March.

Even at the volunteer level, I saw The Ides of March type manipulation both intentionally and unintentionally which was worse because those people genuinely meant to do good but there was no convincing them that they were doing wrong. When you did try to convince them, they held it against you as though you were the bad guy.

I found it very difficult to act as a delegate and this week, I’m no longer blessed with that title. I’m done as I didn’t even go to the event where re-election happens. In fact, I don’t even think I’m on the mailing list anymore, at least I hope I’m not.

While I never saw anything on the level of the events of the movie, I clearly don’t want to put myself into that place in the future. I don’t want to have to make decisions on what I would do.

We have this need to feel that people who represent us are genuinely good people, but what I find is that most of the people who we really believe in are the ones that have the most baggage and are the best at hiding the bad.

I’m not saying that everyone falls into this category; I just am in a place where I don’t want to know who is who. The truth is we probably can’t do better than what we get because it takes a certain type of person who is willing to put themselves out there to play the political game. I’m not one of them.

What do you think? Are you satisfied with the people who represent you?
