Sand Cloud Shark Tank Pitch

Sand Cloud has unique and vibrant beach towel patterns or you can use them as a decorative tapestry or even a scarf in winter. They donate to preserve oceans and marine life. They show releasing sea lions after rescuing them earlier in the year.

The towels are very thin, and they are all handmade in Turkey by individuals. They sell the towels are $47 each. They tested the market and people at the beach want something that is lightweight and easy to cary at the beach. Cost on their towels are $10.

The first year of sales are $30,000, year two $400,000 and the current years is on track for $3 million and they will make around $800,000. They have over $300,000 cash in the bank.

  • Mark Cuban – They are doing advertising campaigns. Mark offers $400,000 and wants 25% equity. They tell him that they don't want to give up that much and want to hear what the other Sharks say. Mark says he is out.
  • Daymond John – wants to know what the money is for? Daymond offers $300,000 for 25%. They counter at $200,000 for 10%. Daymond says he is out.
  • Kevin O'Leary – offers $200,000 for 15% and they need to start doing distributions so that he gets his money back.
  • Lori Greiner – decides to go out because she sees them marketing it as a beach towel, and she sees a wrap and a scarf. She thinks they have completely different views of the product.
  • Robert Herjavec – offers $200,000 for 15%. He doesn't get it, but they are killing it so he wants in. They accept Roberts deal.

Scholly helps students find Scholarships to help pay for their college education. The app helps locate resources for potential scholarships that students would not otherwise find on their own.

There are so many scholarships that are not utilized because students don't know they exist. There are three partners in Scholly, and Christopher won $1.3 million dollars in scholarships. He had a great GPA, but he grew up with a single mother, and he couldn't afford to apply to some schools.

Scholly focuses on outside scholarships that are not institution focused. Over $100 million on scholarships go unclaimed. The app costs $.99 in the app store. They have 92,000 paid apps in less than a year, and he used the fact he won over $1.3 million. Lori Stops the pitch and makes an offer.

  • Mark Cuban – asks how many scholarships are in your database? He answers 10-20,000.
  • Daymond John – tells Christopher that he wants to be part of this, having been raised by a single mother. Daymond offers the same $40,000 for 15%.
  • Kevin O'Leary – asks if he wants a charity donation or do you want to build a business.
  • Lori Greiner – offers $40,000 for 15% in the middle of his presentation. Christopher tells her that he would like to hear the other offers. She wants him to say yes. Lori comes back and says she wants an answer right now, and she doesn't care how they get it done. She loves what he is doing. Lori steps up and says she will do it together, and she demands they make a decision now. Christopher takes her deal.
  • Robert Herjavec – asks Christopher how he updates the scholarships?

The Sharks end up in an all fight after hearing the deal when they were trying to listen to the deal. Mark Cuban, Kevin O'Leary and Robert Herjavec get up and walk out of the Tank. The question is, was it orchestrated, or a real walkout.

Scholly completed the deal with Daymond John and Lori Greiner. The pitch lasted about forty-five minutes and Robert did walk off the show. The company issued a series A funding round afterwards, but had to wait eight months for the episode to air. The app hit number one for two weeks straight in the app store after the show.

Freshly Picked Shark Tank Pitch

Freshly Picked is a company that creates Soft Sole Leather Baby Moccasins and is pitched in Shark Tank Season 5.

Susan looked everywhere to find a Soft Sole Baby moccasin to help her 2nd child learn to walk with a flexible soft toe. She couldn't find a solution, so she created Freshly picked, sewing the moccasin herself.

Her company, Freshly Picked, will do $500,000 during the Shark Tank pitch, and she will make $120,000. She hired a local girl to help her, and she has production in California as well, selling through her website.

Susan tells Kevin her face is on her pillow at night, and Kevin says “Keep it up and I will drop the royalty!”

50% of all Freshly Picked customers come back and purchase three more times. When she started, she had no money.

Susan's brother has a window company, and she convinced him to give her all the old windows. She took a hammer and cleaned out the glass, and then took the aluminum to the scrap yard for money to buy leather to make the moccasins. She continued to put the money back in, and is the reason for the slow start.

Freshly Picked Moccasins sell for $60, and cost her $17 to manufacture and is domestic. She thinks with social media alone she can do between $2-3 Million. She has retail customers interested, but she cannot keep up with the demand as she needs to make an order overseas to handle the retail business.

Kevin wonders how in love she is with retail? Personally, I think that she should stay focused in her online sales as the margin is great, and the revenue is there.

What do the Shark Tank Investors say about Freshly Picked?

  • Mark Cuban – thinks her story about taking the aluminum out of the windows should be in every entrepreneurs manual. That said, he is not the guy to help her with this because he would be learning from her, not the other way around. He is out.
  • Daymond John –  wonders why she needs the money if she feels she is going to do so well in the next year. Susan loves advice, and she needs help with manufacturing because she has not been to school. Daymond offers the $150,000 for 25% without Kevin.  She counters Daymond at $150,000 for 20%.  She tells him that he is her dream Shark. Daymond promises her a space in the office and he tells her she is a tough cookie. They have a deal.
  • Kevin O'Leary – thinks he needs Daymond John, he offers $75,000 with no equity, but a royalty of 7% until his money comes back, and drops to 5% once his money comes back. She still needs Daymond to give her $75,0000 to do the deal. She declines the offer.
  • Lori Greiner – thinks she has what it takes to make it in the baby shoe business. She feels that Susan is better on her own, and for that reason she is out.
  • Robert Herjavec – doesn't think he is the right partner because he can't add anything to the baby shoe business. He is out.

Susan Pedersen scored a deal with Daymond John, and in fact, she has consistently scored a deal in everything she is doing. Staying focused, working hard and taking each step as they come makes her business turn into a multi-million dollar organization. We have a lot to learn from her, that some of us already know, but need to practice.

She has no extended education, and uses hard work, determination and focus to guide her. She knows how to ask for help, but is street smart, and makes solid decisions along the way. Ironically, the deal with Daymond fell through after the show aired, but that did not stop her from continuing to sell over 60% of her product online, and offer her Moccasins in stores such as Nordstrom's. She is one savvy entrepreneur!

Daryl Stevenett comes into Shark Tank only having LifeCaps – Survival Pill without food for the past eight days. He says he is mentally alert, and has adequate nutrition. He is a musician by trade, so he reached out to a friend who has created some of the top energy bars.

LifeCaps – Survival Pill has a shelf life of 5 years, and has gone up to 17 days. He claims this is not a diet pill, but he did lose some weight. He takes a pill for lunch, dinner and if he is hungry he will take a pill for a snack at night.

Lori asks isn't this just a vitamin? She has a lot of supplements that have the nutrients.

LifeCaps – Survival Pill is a single time purchase with sales of $440,000 in five years. If this was real, you would tell us how you would be taking it to doctors claims Mark Cuban, and he tells him he is full of crap. Daryl responds telling Mark he has no crap in him because he hasn't ate for eight days.

  • Mark Cuban – says if it really worked he would go to the doctors for studies and prove it. He is out.
  • Daymond John – says it looks like Filet Mignon, but then as the other Sharks pointed out there is no research, no FDA approval, and he is out.
  • Kevin O'Leary – doesn't like the deal because it is a one-time buy, and he can't make money on this deal.  He is out.
  • Lori Greiner – says when you are selling something that is ingested you have to have the studies and make sure it is safe. She is out.
  • Robert Herjavec – people don't want to put the discipline in to eat healthy, and he is out.

FitDeck Shark Tank Pitch

FitDeck is a custom deck of fitness playing cards that feature a different exercise. All you do is shuffle, pick your card and go.

FitDeck sells for $14.95 on their website and costs $2 to make. They have sold 500,000 in the last seven years, with 55,000 in the previous year for $650,000. Phil broke even the previous year. The majority of his expense is in updated websites and videos and research and development. They also have an App for the last six months at $9.99.

Phil was a Navy Seal and created his FitDeck based on a college game he played while attending Yale. He also attended Harvard Business School.

He chose FitDeck as his opportunity and he recognizes he has to go into the mobile side.

  • Mark Cuban – there are hundreds of thousands of app's and he doesn't see the future in this, he is out.
  • Daymond John – is so impressed and wants to do the deal just because of Phil Black, but the money that is needed to keep current keeps him from going in on the deal. He is out.
  • Kevin O'Leary – can't understand with his background is how he can come up with the valuation on his company. Kevin does not get Phil and a deck of card. He is giving him a free pass to come back with the next idea, but FitDeck is not the deal. He is out.
  • Lori Greiner – likes the simplicity of the card, but it is really difficult to compete in the market. She sees too much competition and she is out.
  • Robert Herjavec – is with him on the cards, but there is something wrong in the business. He is selling the product with incredible margins, but they can't make money. He is out.

The company ends up being acquired by Implus a few months after Phil Black's Shark Tank appearance. It looks like it worked out well for him even though he did not get the deal in Shark Tank.

SwimZip Shark Tank Pitch

SwimZip is a sun protective swim line. Betsy and Berry want to keep their kids safe from the sun. That's where their swim line comes inn. They block 98% of UV cancer causing rays, and their suits zip up, making it easy for kids to dress themselves.

SwimZip comes with a top and bottom. First year sales were $18,000 and the sales for the pitch year are $225,000. The profits are $100,000. Cost to make is $5-7 the product.

Mark asked if there is anything unique about the material, and the design and the zipper is what is unique. They are also in at a lower price then the competition.

Betsy started the company at 26 because she had skin cancer, and she is on a mission and it is her passion to protect the children.

  • Mark Cuban – says Betsy is a beast, but they are still a family business and they haven't broke out yet. It is more difficult to ignite. He is out.
  • Daymond John – tells them that they need to stay with the boutiques, and not go into Target. He sees that they made it past the hardest point, but it is still too early for him. He is out.
  • Kevin O'Leary – asks Daymond John if he could do this for $500,000 and he answers, yes. He is out.
  • Lori Greiner – was a one man band for five years, and she is sitting there today. She sees a lot of that in Betsy. She is willing to make her in offer for $60,000 for 20% equity. Lori wants to go in Target but at terms that won't hurt them. Betsy counters Lori asking her to do $120,000 for 20% equity. Lori said she is not changing her number and wants her to prove she is the right person.
  • Robert Herjavec – says $225,000 is nothing to laugh at, and if they knew all the things that they should be afraid of, they would have never started. He is struggling how this goes from a little boutique business to millions of dollars. He is out.

SwimZip after Shark Tank

SwimZip scored a deal in the Shark Tank pitch with Lori Greiner, but I don't think this one closed after the show. Their is no connection to SwimZip from Lori's site, and the SwimZip blog and store do not look like they are done with Lori's touch. That said, SwimZip has an extensive online store, and is available in many retail locations.
